After publishing this post, I received a request by Samad Aidane (@samadaidane) to expand upon the ideas and techniques described therein. It also contains some additional ideas on the "Do Project Managers Work for the Resources" and "Basic Tenants for Project Management" posts.
This Interview on Resuscitating a Red Project Team was conducted on February 19th by Samad Aidane (Guerilla Project Manager Blog). I hope you all enjoy.
I agree and the pep talk is only the beginning of bringing the team back from the Dead. Some individuals will not respond to this type of pep talk so the PM needs to understand all team members and how to motivate each of them.
As we experienced in New York, sometimes the team needs to be paired down to maintain the right set of individuals who have chemistry. Once we restructured the team to the right set of people, we achieved more success with less people.

Great points Mark! You certainly brought the New York project back from the red. I have learned a lot from you.
One of the things I think is most difficult to do is your first point, regarding team dynamics and composition.
The old world pep talk is not effective beyond a point because the team can see through that. While your post alluded to a pep talk, the pod cast is better in terms of specific techniques to take to address this issue.
